TPS6130A2 Directpath implementation

Hi,

We've design a head phone audio design with the TPS6130A2 device. The datasheet mention that the Directpath feature eliminate the need to use DC blocking cap, In the design procedure(section 9.2.3.5), it's mention that DC blocking caps are required. Now we have some current consumption issue when the output are shorted. Why are you advertising a device that remove them and finally ask to add them?

We don't want to recall unit because of headphone damage.

What's the right implementation?

    TPA6130A2 does not need output DC blocking caps since the output is ground reference. The internal charge pump of the device provides the negative rail. The bottom figure on Fig 34 in the DS illustrate this feature.

    9.2.3.5 mentions that output DC blocking caps are required by conventional single supply amps (not TPA6130A2) that does not have the circuits to generate the negative rail as shown in the top drawing of Fig 34. TPA6130A2 is capable to generate the negative rail to eliminate the need of the output DC blocking caps.

  • One other question. What about short circuit on the output. How does the device handle it?

    If output is activated and a headphone is plugged in, will it protect the output?

    Is there a way to limit the current out of the amplifier?

  • Hi Marc,

    The short circuit protection block will limit the output current to protect the IC when the output is shorted to GND or wrong load.

    Also, if the junction temperature rises above the over temperature threshold due to excessive output current over time, the device will automatically shut down.  When the junction temperature decreases below the threshold, the thermal protection circuitry will automatically turn the device back on.
