DRV8308EVM Faults Won't Clear

Hello,

I am trying to setup the DRV8308EVM for the first time. The included motor is wired as shown in the user guide and i'm supplying the board with 24V. The jumpers are in the positions shown in the user guide. When I connect the board to the computer/gui both the FAULTn and LOCKn indicators on the GUI are red. The led's on the board itself are off. When pressing enable nothing happens. If i hit the reset button, the motor turns on for a few seconds and seems to run normally but then the fault led turns on and the motor stops. FAULTn and LOCKn never turn green on the GUI.

Also if i try to adjust the duty cycle it just reverts back to 1%.

The settings i have on the GUI PWM mode tab are as follows.

Control mode: PWM from MSP430

Commutation: 120 deg

Advance: 30

Speed 1500

MOD120: 2048

HALLPOL: Inverted

Hi Aaron,

Sounds like the GUI is not connecting properly.

What version of GUI Composer Runtime are you using?
Do you see the UART Com Port show up in the Device Manager when the PCB is connected.
Does it match what the board is connecting to?

Version 1.2
USB Serial Port (COM4) in Device manager, Working properly, Driver FTDI 2.12.0.0
In GUI, COM Port is also USB Serial Port (COM4), Baud rate is 9600

Thanks, can you also provide what version of GUI Composer Runtime you are using? v5.3, v5.4, v5.5, v6.0

We have seen an issue in the past with a Windows Bluetooth COM port causing issue. If you see this you may try disabling it.

Composer v6.0
I have a usb bluetooth dongle for wireless keyboard and mouse.

Can't seem to even get the motor to turn on briefly when i hit reset anymore.

Aaron, sorry you're running into this problem. So when the GUI finishes loading and all the red X's go away, can you confirm that clicking the ENABLE button causes a the voltage on the ENABLE testpoint on the board to go high? That info will help isolate the problem.

When i first start up gui, FAULTn and LOCKn measure 3.3 V, ENABLE 0V. After pressing ENABLE, FAULTn and LOCKn measure 3.3V, ENABLE remains OV.

When the board is initially connected should fault and lock be low?

Thanks for the info. It's normal for FAULTn and LOCKn to measure 3.3V. That is the pullup voltage. The DRV8308 will pull either one Low in the presence of a fault or speed-lock.

It sounds like your problem might be due to a known issue that we uncovered 2 weeks ago. Try this: unzip the 3 files in GUI patch.zip into directory:

C:\ti\guicomposer\eclipse\plugins\com.ti.binding.stream_1.0.0.201404071800\com\ti\binding\stream\internal\

(note that if you used a non-default installation directory, the "C:\ti\" part will be different.)

Ok, that's strange. Some more questions:

1. When you click BRAKE/DIR/ENABLE/RESET, does the GUI light icon change from red to green quickly, or does it stay red?

2. Do all 4 of those behave the same way?

3. If you go to the 3rd tab, uncheck Auto Write, and click Read All, what values are populated onto the screen?

DIR/ENABLE/RESET will turn green quickly and stay green. Brake will turn green quickly and switch back to red after a second or less.

When i uncheck auto write and click Read All a yellow box stays around Read All. Not sure if that is normal.

Hi,

I am experiencing exactly the same issue.
The RESET button appears to be linked to enable as it activates this signal. The Enable button is linked to DIR.

The MSP4030 won't generate any PWM. I managed to spin the motor with an external PWM signal and change the register FGSEL to HALL_U (as I am not using any ).

On the other hand, whilst I manage to change some registers on the 3rd tab, (like FGSEL, ENPOL or DIRPOL), I can't change others like SPDMODE, ENSINE etc.. SPDMODE will go back to PWM no matter what I set, ENSINE will stay in the value I set, but it won't drive in sinusoidal.

Aaron and Javier, sorry for this trouble. It almost sounds as if the MSP430 firmware isn't getting programmed properly. There's also a final test procedure for the kit, so there's no good reason that bad kits should be going out.

In the rare case you have an MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad on hand, I could tell you how to reflash the firmware.

We will keep you posted. If you need this urgently, you could ship me your board and I will try to replicate/resolve the problem.

I do not have a launchpad unfortunately. I'm going to try installing on a different computer hopefully today. Just figure its worth trying. I'll post back my results.

I tried installing on a different computer and I'm having the same issues. I think I'd like to have the board replaced and go from there. Please let me know how i should proceed to have it replaced. I originally purchased it through digikey.

All,

For those with a MSP430G2 LaunchPad, the firmware for the EVM is provided along with the GUI at the EVM tool page under the software files. We are still getting to final root cause for the programming issue and hope to have a resolution soon.

The appProgram.out is the binary file and can be loaded using Code Composer Studio with an MSP430G2 LaunchPad.

Is the "appProgram.out" that you are referring to the old code? You stated that you were still getting to final root cause for the programming issue. Just wanted to be clear.

All the files on the tool folder are up to date.

The "appProgram.out" is the compiled binary version of the firmware. It is what is loaded to the MSP430. The GUI also references the "appProgram.out" file to determine the memory location of the variables it is manipulating (how GUI Composer operates).

Scott,

The issue appears to be a miss-match between what is programmed on the EVM during production and what the GUI is expecting. Not a particular issue with any revision itself.

If the customer orders another EVM from the store, will he experience the same issue, or are the EVMs reprogrammed with fixed code?

Scott, we had an issue where incorrect firmware was programmed to a batch of the DRV8308EVM boards. I'm not sure if you got one. You can tell by looking at the default values of the GUI when you launch it.
