DRV10983: DVR10983 heats

Part Number: DRV10983
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00652,

Hello everyone

I am trying to power a MSP430G2231IPW14 , through DRV10983 , I have used the standard  circuit a provided on TIDA-00652, the Voltage at V3P3_Reg, drops to 2.9V, and DRV heats up. V3P3_Reg should maintain 3.3V with micro controller turned on,  there is only microcomputer connected on the board nothing else.

Thanks and Regards

Dinar

  • Hello Dinar,

It sounds like the there is some problems with linear regulator. Can you confirm that the VREG pins is outputing a constant 5V (oscilloscope waveform preferred)?

Can you also make sure the components used match the recommended components shown in the datasheet? Especially the inductor.

    Thanks,

    -Cole

  • Hi Cole

all the parts are as per the BOM in the data sheet, infact I tried soldering DRV 10983 onto the EVM board as well since it was giving register not read error,  I am getting the same results, I have burnt 4 Ics trying to fix the the issue. I have ordered new ICs , will Have to wait till they arrive next week.

I soldered DRV10983Z on the the same board and modified the VREG section with zener and resistor and it works perfectly.

    Regards

    Dinar

  • Hey Dinar,

So if I understand you correctly, the DRV10983Z solved the problem but you still haven't had luck with the DRV10983. Is this correct? If so, I look forward to your results.

A small note that if you are manually soldering the parts, please be sure to follow the correct procedures when soldering parts with a DAP Power Pad (using solder paste, a reflow oven, a lot of flux, heating the vias under the power pad of the device, etc.). If the DAP Power Pad is not attached correctly, the performance of the device will dramatically decrease and the thermal disipation will dramatically decrease as well.

    Best,
    -Cole

  • Thank you for your help, the PCB manufacturing was a issue, we got new boards made and the DRV10983 works .
