TPA3221: TPA3221 Power supply recommendations

Hey guys,

I'm building a 2x PBTL mono amplifiers for 8ohms speakers out of the TPA3221 and I've got a couple of questions for you fine folks out there:

Given that I intend not to use the internal LDO of the TPA3221 and it being 240V mains powered, what power supply solution do you recommend?
What operating voltage is optimal given that I want near maximum output power?
I'd like to use the LM1972 for digital volume control, do I need a buffer/pre-amplifiers between the attenuators and the power amplifiers?

Hakon,

1. We usually rely on the Power Design Services team here at TI for help like this. I can get you in contact with them if you are interested.
2. I would use the Typical recommended in the datasheet of 30V.
3. The TPA3221 has built in input buffering used to eliminate the need for front end buffers/op-amps so you don't need them. The device has selectable input gain and allows for differential or single ended inputs.

Is this a one-off project or a product that will be produced?

This is a one-off project for now. I'll make a few for the guys at the office. It's more of a study of the TPA3xxx series.
Are the Altium component, footprint, and 3D model available yet? It seems the relevant Altium library has not been updated since 2014.

Hakon,

If you do not plan to use the internal 5V LDO, you will need to provide it externally. I do recommend using it though.

Let me check on the Altium footprint and such.
