TLV320AIC3206

Hi,

I am  using AIC3206 CS to playback and load the "High performance Stereo Playback". It could hear some pop issue at headphone jack. I am trying to fine turn the "HP Driver Startup Control", but it can't be eliminated. Do you have any good idea for it? Thanks!

  • Hello,

I would double check the headphone connecton and USB connection and perhaps try a differnt USB cable.

    Regards,

    -Matt

  • Hello Jerry,

Let me see if I can recreate this in the lab and come up with some suggestions. With any part there is always some level of pop to be expected. It can rarely be completely eliminated but there may be a setup that can help mitigate this annoyance.

I'll get back to you as soon as I run some tests,

Please let me know if you need anything else,

    Nate

  • Hi Nate,

Thanks very much! I just adjust LOL/LOR power or mute and adjust HPL/HPR power or mute. I can easy to hear the pop. Even I am fine-tuning the HP Driver Startup Control, I can't get the better result.

If you have any good idea, pls let me know it. Thanks!

  • Hello Jerry,

Thank you for the info. I've been working on the board today but haven't been able to come to a conclusion yet. I'll keep looking into this and get back to you.

  • Hello Jerry,

After spending some more time on this today and I noticed that there is an artifact in the example script in the AIC3206EVM CS High definition stereo playback. This causes the music quality to be poor, especially in the bass response. Specifically in the line:

    # Charge Pump powered, source = int 8MHz OSC
    w 30 01 0a

When replaced with: w 30 01 08 the device sounds much better, but does not power the charge pump.

Have you experienced this issue? Did you make any modifications yourself? This may be affecting the pop level. I plan to look into this more ASAP.

Additionally, I played around with the pop levels myself and noticed the best performance by first powering up the headphone drivers and then unmuting them. I'll need to play with the HP start up control register more as well. Overall, I still heard a small amount of pop, which may be inevitable, because when the charge pump creates the negative rail (allowing for grounded centered output with a single supply) it cannot do this instaneously. This delay, albeit short, causes some offset in the device which is heard as pop on the output.

I'll let you know if I determine any other ways to decrease the pop level,

Please let me know if you need anything else,

    Nate

  • Hi Nate,

I don't find out the power/clock source issue before. But my customer chose AIC3206, they need the direct path function. BTW, I believe when the headphone driver with the charge pump negative voltage, the sound quality will be affected.

Actually, I need to know the device's capability. If AIC3206 has the pop issue, I will promote AIC3204+HP driver. Thanks for your help.

  • Hello Jerry,

Could you send me the scripts you or the customer are using to evaluate the EVM? If you're not noticing poor sound quality then the scripts are probably different (maybe a different CS version). Either way, the scripts would be very helpful. I'd like to play around with your scripts a bit to see if I can get the pop to sound better. The setup I have has a pop that's almost inaudible so I imagine we can get the same for your setup.

    Thanks,

    Nate

  • Hi Nate,

  • Hello Jerry,

I ran those scripts and they have the same problem that the current version of CS does, which is a low base response quality. I've been playing around with the scripts myself for awhile and haven't been able to resolve it. I'll keep working at it, but it may take some time.

Is there a specific timeline you are trying to meet? are your customer's making decision decisions soon?

I'd like to make sure we are meeting your timing goals,

    Thank you for the info,

    Nate

  • Hi Nate,

My customer want to choose the AIC3206. I m worry about the pop issue. If the issue is true, the solution should be AIC3204+TPA6132/33A2. The project pilot run schedule should be Oct'14, not an urgent case. If you get any good news, pls let me know it. Thanks!
