Burr-Brown PCM2702e USB Error

We manufacture USB DACS and our product was working perfectly the past 9 months. Then Suddenly all three of the same USB DAC stopped working. Windows, Mac , and Linux stopped recognizing the USB device. We cannot find any drivers for this chip. We get a code 43 error on windows . Also we tried to drop a system file called USBAUDIO.sys. file in the system32 folder. It did nothing. So then we tried to contact Windows customer support. They told us it was a manufacture problem. So we called digi-key and they could not figure this out. Also all the pins are perfect on both ports. So then we called Texas Instruments and they wanted us to send pictures of our boards. So here they are. One without parts on it , and one completely built. Please help US!!!

  • Hi Jake,

I'm sorry this has pooped up all of the sudden. Since the design was working before hand and the parts have not changed in the time frame you have been manufacturing the product, it does seem to point that something in the manufacturing process has changed. This might be why the other companies have suggested this.

How many systems have failed so far? If you look at the part marking numbers are they the same as systems that are working? Have you compared the physical characteristics of a working system to a failing system? Chip placement on pads, orientation, solder joints, etc. Have you also checked that the supplies are operating properly and the part is getting the correct supply voltages?

  • We have checked voltages , chip placement , and soldering joints. We manufactured these all at the same time. We had one that went to two audio shows and won two awards. That one also stopped working all at the same time. The chip is a Burr-Brown PCM 2702e (japan) and the other number on the chip is 0BM079M. Thank you for the reply. I hope this gets figured out. We really need it.

  • Hi Jake,

Another check would be the crystal, is it functioning properly and providing an adequate signal according to the data sheet?

    Justin
  • This crystal is 10ppm etched 12.000 meg. The two caps we use is 18 ps. What do you think?
  • We will also accept a pin for pin replacement if you can find one. If you want us to send you our USB DAC product to examine, we will be more that glad to do that. Please let us know.

  • Hi Jake,

I will be investigating the issue with an EVM and it will take a while (a few days) as I do not have one on hand.

  • Hi Jake,

I have tested a device that uses the PCM2702 with my Windows 7 installation and it is working properly. Could you elaborate more on how it fails to work? Does the OS recognize a device is there? If so does it give any information about the device? No drivers need to be installed as it will identify itself as a USB audio class device.

    Justin
  • So we have tested the DAC again and it is doing the exact same thing. when we plug it into any usb port it says device cannot be recognized. We have tried everything. It does not give any information on the device. When it was working before. It would say usb audio device and give the chip name. Now it does nothing except for that error message. The weird thing is that all of the DAC's stopped working at the same time. So I was wondering if you could send me out one of the chips and we could try the new chip? Let me know if this would work. We would like to receive it soon so if we need to pay for express shipping then that is fine. If these new chips work then we will order more. If they do not work then maybe we could send the whole device so you could have a look? please let me know.

  • Hi Jake,

We currently do not have any chips here, and since the part is NRND, we do not have a sample supply available. You can however order some from digikey or mouser, there is a link in the Sample and Buy tab in the PCM2702 product folder to buy from either of those distributors.

  • Hello Justin, we ordered brand new chips from Rochester Electronics. We soldered them in and we have the same error message. We need a answer for this quickly. I'm not sure if we need a driver. Please let me know. Like i said before we can send off the USB DAC to you guys.

  • Hi Jake,

Yes you can send in a DAC and I can take a look at it.

  • Good day, I have same problem. My dac doesn't reconnized in windows 7 (or XP). The crystal generator is working, the voltages are good. Then I connect dac to usb port I see data transfer on USB+/USB- wires using my oscilliscope.
