AFE5801: AFE5801 and TSW1405

Part Number: AFE5801

i have tried using AFE5801 with TSW1405, but i was not able to see any signal in the real FFT plot in HSDC. Could anyone please suggest any modifications to be done in HSDC or in AFE GUI in order to work with both of them.

  • Hi Harsha,

Thanks for using TI AFE5801EVM and TSW1405 data capture board.
We will look into your question very soon.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Chen
  • Hi Harsha,

    How are you?

First Could you please confirm you are using TSW1405 evm (USB to your PC) and

running HSDC (full name called: High Speed Data Converter Pro) GUI

which will recognize you are connecting TSW1405 evm to your PC's USB, right?

We don't understand the details about not able to see any signal in HSDC GUI.

Does it mean the HSDC GUI is showing you some error messages?

Or it is working but you only see the noise without any signal?

Or maybe the HSDC GUI is not working correctly at all?

Could you please show us the FFT plot screen?

    Thank you very much!

    Have a nice day.

    Best regards,

    Chen

then we can understand more what is happened.

  • Hi Harsha,

    How are you?

Also do you also use TSW1400 evm (besides TSW1405 evm),

because we are often using AFE5801 evm with TSW1400 data capture board.

If not available, then that is ok.

We would like to start to show you how AFE5801 is setup.

Then please just skip TSW1400 settings part (if you don't have TSW1400 evm)

    For AFE5801 evm connections:

    1) Please double check if you are using external clock in.

    It is connected to J11.

    2) Please double check you are using bridge adapter between AFE5801 evm and your TSW1405 evm.

    3) Please make sure +5V power input and Ground input to AFE5801 evm.

    4) Please make sure its USB is connected to your computer.

    5) Here is one example for CH8 input signal is connected to J8.

For AFE5801 evm board jumper connections:

Please make sure all the jumpers shown above are connected correctly.

Notice: when you are using external clock IN (by using J11),

then please at first disconnect the jumper P4.

If you use on-board clock (then, leave J11 open),

then please shunt P4 jumper to use on-board OSC for clock purpose.

    For running AFE5801 GUI:

This is just a basic test (shown above).

After you have loaded this GUI,

please just Press "Init for TSW1400" button.

After that, then you can continue to run your HSDC GUI

and choose to show CH8 test result option.

We should see very basic option's test result on HSDC GUI screen.

    Thank and best regards,

    Chen

I was doing all the above mentioned steps but the problem was, output of the AFE5801 is configured as 2's compliment but TSW1405 can only take signed offset values. Before doing this change I was getting only noise in the HSDC. But now after changing the ouput format I am able to see the signal ion HSDC.

    Harsha

  • Hi Harsha,
Thank you for the description to us.
    That is really helpful.
In order to keep AFE5801 running with 2's comp output mode,
could you please try the following method?
Please look at your computer under the following directory:
    c:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\High Speed Data Converter Pro\1405 Details\ADC files\
You could see the following ini file:
such as: AFE5801.ini (or AFE5801_12X.ini or AFE5801_12x.ini) file
If you can find it, please open this file
and you can see the following command:
Data Postprocessing=xxx (xxx means some code already existing in that command)
Could you please add one more command?
    such as: Data Postprocessing=xxx,1:2048
And please save this new ini file to a new name (such as "NEW.ini" file)
    Then:
    1) Please Exit High Speed Data Converter Pro GUI.
    2) Please re-run High Speed Data Converter Pro GUI again.
    3) Please select "NEW" (NEW.ini file) as the file you just created.
    4) Please try to run (Capture) HSDC GUI again.
(in this case, your AFE5801 GUI has already been set to be 2's Comp mode)
Hopefully this time you can see it is working correctly without all the noise.

Thank you for using TI AFE5801 evm and TSW1405 evm.
    Have a nice day!

    Best regards,
    Chen
