New ADS1282EVM-PDK does not work

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADCPRO, TMS320VC5507, ADS1282, ADS1258

I jsut bought a ADS1282EVM-PDK and followed the manual to use it in ADCPro. http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/ads1282evm-pdk.html

However, when I tried to load the EVM plugin in ADCPro, I did not see message window for installing USBstyx as stated in 10.2 Fig. 17 in the user guide. Then I got time out error and "DSP is not ready" msg in ADCPro. Meanwhile, only 4 segments of the 8 segment LED on the MMB0 DSP board are lit. Check the WINXP device manager window of winxp, only see NI-VISA entry, no USBStyx. Looks like the DSP fw can not be launched correctly. Either the bootloader is wrong or the fw is wrong. The MMB) board is TMS320VC5507 dsp based. Can anyone help me to figure out what's wrong?

I have already sent the help request to TI technical support  for more than two weeks and call them a couple of times, but the only reply is they can not provide the assistance at the moment and suggested me to try this site.

I use this evaluation board package to speed up my evaluation, but now I get stuck here and can not get any useful response from TI. Can anyone help me, thanks lot.

  • Kevin,

I apologize for the trouble you've had getting support - I'll look into why this happened so we can make sure it doesn't again.

I will have my ADCPro expert respond to help you out.

  • Kevin -

Do you have a +/-10V supply connected to the board?  In addition to the wall supply, the EVM requires a +/-10V supply be connected to the +/-VA pins on J14 of the MMB) motherboard.  Without this additional supply, the software driver will not load and the EVM cannot be used with ADCPro.

  • I did not connect +/-10v. After I connect the supply, now It WORKS.

In the manual, it just said "For optimum noise performance,  the external +/- VA should be used" (P5). Looks like it is not absolute unnecessary. And also the error mesage "DSP not ready" in the ADCPro mislead me. So I put focus on the MMB0 DSP board and thought this board has some problems. Then I found I could download my test DSP firmware with correct response from DSP, which indicates the DSP is functional. For some reason, looks like the PDK-EVM firmware can not respond correctly to host. Now it can work after connecting external power, seems the firmware run some self test before enumerate itself to the host. I do not know how to detect +/-10v is not connected. If the +/-10V is used by EVM only not by the MMB0 board, I think the correct behaviour is the DSP board can still enumerate itself to host and continue to install the USBtyx driver. Then start to run self test and ADCPro displays the correct error message like "EVM is not ready" or "+/-10V is not connected rather than "DSP is not ready". Now it is easy to narrow down the issue for user and TI engineers.  This is just my feedback and suggestion.

By the way, I never  thought this community is a great channel that I can get reply from TI so efficiently, better than contact technical support directly. So TIers should send clear message to users that this is the best and fast communication channel to solve the issue.  As you know, I called technical support a couple of time in the past two weeks, but the replies are like "someone is monitoring the case", then "no resource available". When I got these contradictive replies, I felt very disappoint about the TI service. But now I feel better. Thanks TIers. I will encourage my co-workers to use this site.

In addition, MMB0 is a general evaluation motherboard. Can I get the schematic and firmware source code for ADS1282S to catch up my lost time and finish my evaluation? In Manual P10, it is said user can contact TI for schematic and other  information. Thanks

    Regards

    Kevin

  • Kevin -

I am glad that we got you up and working.  We are working on clarifying the user guide for the ADS1282 and I agree that it may not be as clear as it could be.

We also appreciate the feedback on ADCPro.  We appreciate you comments when it comes time to update/add features to the existing hardware/firmware.

The communities are a new way to help our customers that we are trying and are encouraged by your thoughts for this method of communication.

Regarding the schematic and fw source code, the schematic should be available in the ADS1282 user guide available on the web.  Let me know your email address or the best way to get the fw source code to you.

  • Thanks lot.

The EVM-PDK user guide just has schematic for EVM board, does not include MMB0 board schematic.

    Kevin

  • I would also like to locate the fw source code and the schematic & docs for the MMB0 motherboard.

  • I am posting the schematic to the MMB0.

However, this is not meant to be a reference design and there is no documentation available.

I'm also checking into the sample code for the ADS1282.

  • Here is the firmware for the system. Please note that there is no other documentation available and that this should also not be considered to be a reference software.

    ADS1282EVM.zip
  • In the ADS1282EVM firmware package, the file "estyx.h" is missing. Could you please advise where I can find it?

  • Mr Cai -

We would first like to ask what you are doing with respect to the firmware files?

The firmware used for the EVMs and ADCPro is not driver code and is only applicable in the context of the evaluation system.  The  communication is based on a file system that would probably be excess overhead for any type of end equipment software.

If you are still in need of the file or need more details, you can visit http://estyx.berlios.de/

  • I'm testing the ADS1282EVM board I just got. The test program come with the board runs good. I'm trying to modify the code to do some more detailed test.

    Thanks,

    Jason

  • Thanks for posting this information.  I too had the same problem.  Without the 10V power supply connected, the best I could do was "DSP Not Ready".  Then I saw this thread on the forum and decided to try the 10V.  It worked and I am now back in business.  Next step is to connect my signals to the ADC Inputs terminals.  Any suggestions on pitfalls to avoid here are appreciated.

Even though the manual was updated to be more specific about the need for the 10V supply, I managed to convince myself after reading the manual that the system should connect up OK without it and I only really needed the 10V supply when I was ready to input the signal.

  • hello,

I am using MMB0 rev d with ads1258 , i have the same problem , it shows download failed when i use adcpro. I am using a AC adapter of 6 volts to power up MMB0

  • Hi Adityasai,

Welcome to the TI E2E Forums!

Have you tried the above suggestion to connect the required +/-10V supplies to the MMB0 to make this EVM work? Even though these supplies are supposedly only used for the analog circuitry, the digital communication is held up until they are applied.

    Best Regards,
    Chris
