Vref pin usage in DAC8560

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC8560

I planned to use DAC8560 DAC in my board. It has internal voltage reference of 2.5V and Vref pin is provided to source external reference. In spec sheet  Vref pin description is mentioned as voltage input or output. If I connect 1V reference voltage through that pin, whether the internal reference voltage generator will be disabled or how it reacts.

  • Arun,

When using an external reference with this device, the internal reference should be disabled by writing to the digital interface as is described on page 19 of the datasheet. If you connect an external 1V reference without disabling the internal reference, the internal reference will source as much current as it can in an attempt to regulate the voltage back to 2.5V.

Let me know if you have further questions.
  • Hi,

Thanks for the information, need few more clarifications below.

      1. The internal reference is enabled by default, So I can't able to connect a reference voltage at power on itself.

      2. What is the suggested way and part to connect external reference voltage.

  • Arun,

You can connect an external reference to the device at power up,  you just need to disable the internal reference after the power up sequence is complete. You will just see increased current consumption to the device until the internal reference is disabled because it is sourcing so much current to the reference buffer.
