DLP3010EVM-LC: Problem with background light

Part Number: DLP3010EVM-LC

We recently purchased the DLP3010EVM-LC for microscopic light control applications. We would like to display static 1-bit monochrome (red) 2D patterns which are set via HDMI in the external patterning mode.

We project a small circle of 5px radius on the DMD on our CCD camera we can see the circle but also some background light of all the pixels that should be switched off. Is the background inherent to the to light scattering at the DMD or can the contrast be improved using the settings?

Our current settings are: bit depth = 1 , Patterns per frame=1, Pre-exposure Dark Time =224, Exposure Time= 5000 , Post-exposure Dark Time=40
