Issues with Powering on EVM430F6736

Dear all

I am using one EVM430F6736 energy meter. I am having a issue with the power up process. Following steps have been followed by me.

1. I have connected 240V RMS at voltage terminals.

2. I have connected a current source at CUR terminals.

In manual it is mentioned that power up will be directly from HV source. No external voltage source is required for boosting the DSP. But it seems my EVM is not energized at all. Is there any indication that indicates the status of the EMV (Powered on or off).

  • Hi Soham,
    What are your jumper settings?

If you connect a USB FET to the JTAG header, does the board power up?

Have tried powering with an external source on JP3 and with JP1 set to "EXTERNAL"?
  • Hi Cameron

its MSP430F673x 1-phase Energy meter version 2.4 . I have placed Jumper on "VCC_PL" (Jumper 3 settings). According to the document it says it will power up from my voltage source. I have applied rated voltage 240V. But still is not powering up.
  • Hi Cameron

I have found one thing. If I am placing jumper on ''VCC_Extr" (JP3) then the energy meter energizes itself. But from voltage source itself after changing the jumper setting it is not on. Can you help?

    regards
    Soham
  • You mention you're changing JP3, but these should be JP4, can you confirm? I you have shorted JP3, it may have harmed the device.
Also check to see that JP4 is set to VCC_PL.

I'm told that the LCD may not be enabled by default, and that there is not necessarily an LED indicator for board power. Try connecting to the GUI and see if the GUI Comms indicator turns green. In that case, the device is receiving power.

Can you check to see if you are getting DVCC on either of the P4 pins (1 and 2, or 2 and 3) with a voltmeter?

  • Hi

I have connected JP4 at VCC_PL only with keeping JP3 open. The Screen or LED may not glow but at least I should get VCC from all the DVCC pins. I am not getting that. When I power up from external source bu setting JP4 at VCC_EXT then everything is working fine. And I dont know why but the GUI inside the Slaaa517 is not also working. I am not able to run the application to see the GUI screen about the status.

    with regards

  • Soham,
Let's attack the GUI issue later.

Can you please check the following:
-Measure the voltage on the network (trace), labeled "Vsupply" in Figure 25 of the guide? This should be ~6-7 volts.
-Inspect the solder joints of the components shown in Figure 25.
-Check the orientation of the diodes.

Lastly, if you're able to send me a picture of the way you have the board setup for the capacitive DVCC supply, it would help me catch some things we may be missing.
  • Hi Cameron,

I just wanted to let you know that we're working on the GUI issue in the thread below. Thanks for supporting Soham's other questions here.

  • Hi

I have checked Vsupply point. It is coming 1.1 volts only. I am sending you the picture of the setup so that you can identify what the problem is. The picture is attached in the link below.

  • Soham,
I haven't forgotten about you, but I haven't been able to locate an EVM. This really sounds like there is something wrong with the components on that net. Is it possible one of these became damaged. Did the EVM ever turn on before?
  • Hi cameron

I really appreciate your constant help. You had helped me with other issues also in past if you remember. Yes, I think the EVM model we have got is faulty. Somehow the powering circuit is gone. But its okay because I am using an external supply here. Thanks again for your help.

    regards
