ISO1541: Creepage Requirement

Part Number: ISO1541

Hi Team,

Good day!

I have a customer who needs an Isolated I2C interface and are interested in our IS1541 . Recently they computed their required creepage of their application and will need 5.6mm spacing. Can our ISO1541 support this? If not, do we have any other I2C isolated interface?

Thanks!

Best Regards,

Alfred

  • Hi Alfred,

The ISO1541 cannot be used to achieve the 5.6mm spacing. The SOIC package available can only achieve >4mm creepage.

Could you please check with customer why the 5.6mm spacing is required? What is the isolation rating/peak voltages that are expected in the system?

If necessary, we can also go with an alternate solution where a digital isolator can be used for I2C communication.
Please refer to http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slyt403/slyt403.pdf. The app note shows how to design an I2C bus using digital isolators. I would recommend using our latest ISO77xx family of digital isolators for improved performance. (The app note refers to an older part). This should give customer a creepage distance of >8mm.

Let me know if there are any doubts.

    Anand Reghunathan

  • Hi Anand,

Thanks so much for the response! Let me check with customer what are their specific requirements. I have also share the app note and I will let you know if they would opt for this option instead. I promoted the ISO7731F as an alternate for the digital isolator.

    Thanks!

    Best regards,
    Alfred
