DRV10983: DRV10983-Q1

Part Number: DRV10983

Hi,

I have a PCB that uses the DRV10983-Q1 chip. The Motor rotates when VCC and GND are applied. But the RPMs is probably in the 10-15 range instead of the expected 30,000 RPM. Changing the Vcc between 6.2V to 12.3V causes the motor rotation speed to change but the rotation is again in the same range as above.  My guess is that the SCL, and SDA pins (i.e. I2C pins for the chip) have to be set using the GUI interface for the chip. Is that correct? Need help or input.

Also after downloading the DRV109xx EVM on my desktop, the tool invokes the user to download LVRTE2014f2std.exe (i.e. Unable to locate the LABVIEW Run-Time Engine executable even though it has been downloaded in the same folder). After downloading the executable it still complains about the same thing. So I am not sure what I am missing.

I watched the video from Innocent Irakoze, and Chris Clearman but have been unable to reach them. If anyone from TI could provide support in this regard that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks

Mohammad

  • Hey Mohammad,

Before diving too deep into the problem, I want to clarify some things:
    1) Is the pcb a custom-built pcb or a DRV10983-q1 evm? Can you give me some background on what this pcb is?
    2) Please try installing the LABVIEW Run-Time Engine executable in the default location and in administrative mode, and please see if that gets the gui working.
  • Hi Sanmesh,

    Many thanks for your response.

    1) The pcb is a custom built pcb that uses the DRV-10983-Q1 chip. The pcb has many similarities to the DRV10983-Q1 EVM. The circuit being used very closely resembles the DRV10983-Q1 Application Schematic provided in the TI technical documentation. If not identical. The 47uH inductor is not placed at the input of the SW pin.

    2) Yes this option was tried initially but then later placed in the same folder as an alternative to see if it resolved the issue (By this I mean, when unzipping the LVRTE2014f2std.exe zip folder. The setup.exe appears in the same folder as shown below. See screen snapshots. Let me know if we can connect offline. mumar@asc-ind.com. Thx.

  • Hey Mohammad,

The motor will not spin at the proper speed for the following conditions (there are other cases as well):
    1) If the motor tuning parameters haven't been burned in the EEPROM
    2) If the speed pin isn't activated through either analog voltage of pwm duty (depending on the setting) according to the datasheet (www.ti.com/.../DRV10983-Q1).

    Please check these two things.

Please make sure that either the 47uH inductor or 39 ohm resistor is placed as recommended by the " Application and Implementation" section of the datasheet.

For now let's focus on getting the gui to work so that we can program the motor tuning settings into the DRV10983-q1.

I can't see the pictures you sent. please send them again.

I unzipped the files of the installer in the default directory "C:\National Instruments Downloads\LabVIEW\2010 SP1f5\Run-Time Engine\Standard" (the setup.exe is here), and the NI LabVIEW Run-Time Engine 2010 SP1 in "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\".

From looking up this error, following this source (knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails, make sure lvrt.dll file is in "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\Shared\LabVIEW Run-Time\2010".

Hope that helps. Let me know what you find.
  • Also, when you say unzip the Run-Time Engine 2010 SP1 which in my case will be Run-Time Engine 2014. I don`t see this second zipped folder for the RunTime Engine. Please let me know.

  • The Run-Time Engine 2010 SP1 isn't a separate zip file, but rather I was trying to say that when running the setup.exe, I set the default directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\". I apologize for not being clear. I will say now the installation instructions in terms of the 2014 files that I followed:
I am using a windows 10 pro, 64 bit operating system.
    1) Go to www.ni.com/.../ and download the "LVRTE2014f2std.exe" which is the 32 bit installer. Make sure it is the 32 bit installer, even if you are on a 64-bit system. Once downloaded and opened, it will open a winzip self-extractor. In the "Unzip to folder" entry, I left the default "C:\National Instruments Downloads\LabVIEW\Run-Time Engine\2014 (32-bit) f2 Patch\Standard", and clicked the button "Unzip".
    2) Once the installer is unzipped, open "setup.exe". In the "Destination Directory" prompt, I left the default "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\". Make sure in the "Features" window, "NI LabView Run-Time Engine 2014 f2" is selected. Run the installer.
    3) Make sure in "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\Shared\LabVIEW Run-Time", there is a "2014" folder, and inside that folder, there is a "lvrt.dll".

Please let me know if following these steps works for you. Also please resend the screen captures you sent before.
  • Please let me know if following those steps works for you. Also please resend the screen captures you sent before.

  • 1) Which operating system are you using and are you using 32 bit or 64 bit machine? You're downloading the "LVRTE2014f2std.exe" 32 bit installer of the runtime engine correct?
    2) Were you able to follow the steps I followed without any problems or were there deviations? Were you able to find the "lvrt.dll" file?
  • Helped thru the process but still could not run the DRV109xx EVM application.

I am not sure what is meant in "In the "Destination Directory" prompt, I left the default "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\" .
    Please clarify this statement.

Also what do you mean by "Features" window, I don`t see any selection option for "NI LabView Run-Time Engine 2014 f2". The NI LabVIEW2014 Installer never completes past "Please wait while the installer initializes."
The installer never completes past and says "This program is subject to the accompanying License agreement"

Error window pops up with the following:
"Error: This installer needs access to "My Documents". However, this location "G:\Documents\" is not available. Ensure that this directory exists and is available and run the installer again."

I don`t understand the above as the G:\Documents\ is not even being used. Everything is in the C:\ drive.
  • Please let me know if there is any kind of license that has to be issued by National Instruments.
  • 1) Windows. 64 bit. Yes, 32 bit installer of the runtime engine.

    2) Yes, was able to locate the lvrt.dll file in the folder as suggested.
  • or alternatively by Texas Instruments.
  • I accidentally selected "TI thinks resolved" so please forgive me for that.

Innocent Irakoze, our TI product marketing engineer will contact you offline to try to resolve this issue.

Meanwhile, I'll answer your previous questions.

When I say "In the "Destination Directory" prompt, I left the default "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\", I meant in the NI Labview Run-time Engine 2014 f2 installer that opens when you run the setup.exe, you leave the directory field as "C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\" as shown below:

By features window, I mean in the same NI Labview Run-time Engine 2014 f2 installer that opens when you run the setup.exe, there should be a window as shown below:

When you say "The installer never completes past and says "This program is subject to the accompanying License agreement"", I dont know if there is any license that needs to be issued, but I do see in the features tab a "NI Labview 2014 Deployable License". Maybe I'll look into that.

I have recorded my whole runtime engine process below so hopefully that helps.

  • Hi Sanmesh,

See attached. I am going to try a different laptop to get it running. the drive on which the zipped folder is being saved may not be allowing to run the tool from its environment. I am currently uninstalling and deleting all NI installers. As I have installed and re-installed several times. Other thoughts are the antivirus software maybe conflicting with the NI installer. Thx.

  • Cole Macias, the apps engineer who debugged your issue with you offline says he saw this in the webex and essentially, you determined that the GUI needs to be installed on the computer’s hard drive (e.g. C:\) in order to run the GUI as expected.
Since we met offline on this issue, please click “this resolved my issue” so other users can find this answer more easily. If you have further question unrelated to this error, ask the question on a separate thread.”
