Switch-Mode Power Supplies and Merchant DC-DC converter applications often require high current drive and hard switching to drive large loads. This hard switching of the power switches in combination with layout constraints often lead to noise in the system. This noise presents itself in the form of ground bounce and ringing at the driver's input/output given that power ground and controller ground are connected. Most gate drivers are already equipped to handle short negative pulses at the output stage through the internal FETs body diodes. However It is necessary to take precautions to prevent the overshoot and undershoot from damaging the driver's input.
TI's UCC27511A solves this issue with its input capable of handling voltages up to -5V (independently of the supply voltage VDD) in addition to providing the same features as UCC27511. The pinout, available packages and parameter specifications are the same for both drivers. UCC27511A is an improved drop-in replacement for UCC27511 in noisy environments.
The added negative voltage handling capability feature increases the overall system robustness and provides designers with safety margin in the event of noisy conditions.
