BQ76920 external cap

Dear Sir

I'm in charge of power FAE for SONY in TIJ.

Would you advise me that is it OK to use 6.3[V] capacitor

to CAP pin as well as VC pin in case of around 4[V] battery using

because there is no description of cap part voltage except for 16[V] description

in the EVM document.

Any advice should be highly appreciated.

Best regards,

Shidara

  • Hi Shidara-san,

We find that generally it is a good idea to have higher voltage margin on the external components, as there may be transient voltage spikes induced by system influences such as inductive ringing, short circuit in discharge, etc. If you determine that your system will never exceed the rating of these components, it is OK to use those lower voltage capacitor on the CAP pin. However, for VCx pins, please note that it is typical to see 2x a particular cell voltage when balancing is activated (this is due to the mechanism for activating a cell balance channel). Thus you should consider sticking with the higher voltage rating on those capacitors.

    Thanks,

    Allen
