BQ40Z50 I2C Test Sequence Available?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, EV2400

Customer is interested in testing thei I2C interface between their processor and the BA40Z50.

From customer: Regarding compatibility with I2C. We are trying to confirm compatibility with a processor's I2C port (and modified software if necessary).  We are looking for a command / response test sequence that they can try to communicate with the SMBus ports on the bq40z50 EVM (bypassing the EV2300).  Can TI provide us such a sequence, which would stress a standard I2C port?

Thanks,

John

Here is a document that we provided a few years ago to cover the SMBus protocol and potential issues and you may encounter.

  • Hi Tom,

I'm working with BQ40z50 both with evaluation board and ready battery pack based on that IC.

I would really appreciate if you can answer following questions:

    1. On evaluation board we need to press some of the buttons to be able to communicate with the battery gauge in the begging.

This button is not available on reference design for the battery pack. Will it cause any issue? Why that button is present in EVAL board?

    2. On the 4s1p battery pack we see that communication stops after approx. 5 minutes and cannot be resumed. We tried with both EV2300 and EV2400.

    3. Is that circuit available for mass production?

    Best Regards,

    Roman

  • Roman,
If the device is in Shutdown mode, then a charging voltage must be applied to the Pack pin to wake it up. That is the purpose of the WAKE button on the EVM. It provides an quick and easy method for the user to wake up the device. The second issue could be that the device is going into Shutdown. It will no longer be functional until you wake it back up. The EVM is shipped to support a 3S cell configuration. If you are using a 2S configuration, then you will need to change the Shutdown voltage threshold to prevent it from routinely entering Shutdown. The WAKE button is not normally installed on production packs. Most users either ship the pack in Standby mode or require that the charger be attached before the first use.

  • Hi Thomas,

Thank you for answering the question!
I'll try to apply the voltage to wake the gauge up.
