BQ27GDK000EVM Not Charging with BQ28Z610

I have a BQ27GDK000EVM and a BQ28Z610 connected to a battery. I'm in BQStudio - GDK - Manual Control. I set the Charge voltage, current taper current, discharge current, term voltage, and I click "Start" under Charge Control. The GDK Voltage on the left jumps up to 4200mV but the current stays at 0mA.

The batt_con LED is on, The yellow LED and the red STAT LED turn on when I tell it to charge. What do I need to change in order to get this to charge? I downloaded the program and upgraded the firmware yesterday.

Hi Sam,

On the EVM did you short P1 and P2 together? This is required for a 1S configuration. Also can you post a screenshot of your register screen?

Yes, P1 and P2 are shorted, "with a piece of wire."

Your fets are not enabled. Please click FET_EN in the right subpanel to turn them on.

You meant click FET_EN under Commands on the top right subpanel, right? It made FET_EN show up in the log panel. Is that what I was supposed to do?

I've restarted BQStudio and now XCHG is green and XDSG is red, but it still won't supply current.

Sam,

Your protection is likely tripping. Please export a gg.csv file(data memory tab) and post it. I will replicate your setup.

Alright so I've closed and opened and restarted and plugged and unplugged a bunch of times and all of a sudden IT'S WORKING! Thank you for your time and effort. It's (somehow) fixed.

Sam,

I didn't immediately see anything in your gg.csv that would cause a fault given your battery voltage. In your original post one of your screenshots show the GDK voltage listed as 540 mV when not charging. ~500 mV is the voltage you see when the charger on the GDK has been left floating so double check your connection and jumper settings on the GDK.

Coincidentally the fluke operation has happened again! It seems to work first thing in the morning, only the first time, if I give it power, then USB, then open the program. So I'm rel-dis-relling right now so long as I don't disturb the operation.

I have the I2C jumpers in place on the BQ28Z610 (they were there for the EV2300 tests). I'm sure I tried it without the jumpers with the 2400 and got the same result, but if it stops working again, I'll try that.

That fluke failed before discharge so I'm still back at square 1.

I've looked at the jumper descriptions in the Gauge Development Kit Users Guide and I'm not sure what I'm looking at. SMBPU1, for instance, is nowhere to be found in the document, and googling it didn't help. Maybe you can guide this effort.

JP1-6 are in place

JP7 is to the left
JP8 is not connected
JP9-10 are to the right (close to the TI logo)

The BQ28Z610 EVM SPI pull-up headers have been both in place and not in place. It makes no difference.

I keep getting the "End Task (Unexpected): Discharge - false " error if I try to discharge. Charge just thinks its charging.

Do you have any other ideas?

Hi Sam,

What current did you set the GDK to discharge at? Make sure your Dsg current threshold is set appropriately in data memory.

Dsg Current Threshold is set at 100 mA
Chg Current Threshold is set at 50 mA

I'm trying to discharge at 100 mA and charge at 500 mA. Strangely, that fluke occurrence lets it charge even with this threshold.

Could it have something to do with thermistors or other safety? My battery has a red (+), black (-) and white (?) wire. Is the white used for something?

The computer displays the battery voltage correctly so the computer can talk to the gas gauge through the GDK.
When I try to charge, the computer says the GDK voltage is 4.2V. The voltage applied to the bq28z610 through the GDK is 4.2V (verified with multimeter). But the battery isn't receiving this (verified with multimeter). It has to be something with the gas gauge, right? or maybe the GDK isn't telling the gas gauge to let current through.

Sam,

If you plan to discharge at 100 mA, decrease your discharge current threshold value. The white wire is likely for temperature of the battery pack. If you attach the datasheet for the battery, I could provide more detail.

Are your fets enabled when you attempt to charge? the CHG and DSG flags should be set while XCHG and XDSG should be clear.

Ben,

I do not have a datasheet for the battery. The Model number is 95A16715 and the manufacturer is ICCNexergy. The battery is able to give and receive current manually (without the EVMs) so the temp wire doesn't appear to be interfering.

I'll try decreasing the current threshold as soon as I get it working again. Now the BQ28Z610 won't stay awake. The chip/battery/gauge icon on the bottom left of BQstudio is gray, then I press the button to wake the BQ28Z610 and it comes back alive for about 30 seconds, then it goes gray again.

Is it common to have so many problems? Am I doing something wrong?

My fets don't appear to be enabled. They are red, but sometimes XCHG is green. How do I set those flags? I've clicked the FET_EN command but that just brings it down to the log panel.

Sam,

FET_EN would enable your fets as long as their is not a safety condition currently active. Try sending a RESET command and then FET_EN. If XCHG and XDSG continue to be set, adjust your protection settings.

Try setting the SLEEPCHG bit to 1. This should keep the CHG fet enabled while in sleep. When you apply your charger (GDK), the device should wake up.

Ben,

1. Clicking FET_EN turns XCHG from red to green. XDSG stays red.
2. Where is SLEEPCHG? How do I set it?
3. The bq28z610 stays awake if I hold the wake button constantly. That's what I'll be doing until it stops going to sleep.
4. What protection settings should I change? There are lots of thresholds. Are these minimums or maximums?

Sam,

1. XDSG will prevent you from discharging.

2. SLEEPCHG is locating in the Settings Class, Configuration Subclass under FET Options

3. I would check your battery connections. The Wake button simply provides a connection from Pack+ to 2P through a 1KOhm resistor. If there is an issue with your battery connection, the device will not turn on unless you press the Wake button, which would provide power to the VCC2 pin.

4. Since XDSG is set, I would check if CUV, OCD and AOLD are set appropriately. Reference p 10-15 of the TRM:www.ti.com/.../sluua65b.pdf.

Ultimately, I suspect your issue is with your battery connection.

I disabled sleep on Data Memory - Settings - DA Configuration - SLEEP (is now green to disable sleep).
I also configured for 1 cell on Data Memory - Settings - DA Configuration - CC0 (is now now green for 1-cell).

1. Okay
2. Okay, SLEEPCHG is now red. So green=0, red=1 (set).
3. When I have just the bq28z610 and the battery, the bq28z610 draws about 1uA from the battery. When I press the wake button, it draws 200-300mA for about 15 seconds, then it falls asleep again back to 1uA. The battery is at 4.026V. Battery is connected. Sleep problem solved in registers as stated above.
4. The entire Safety Alert A register is green. As is Safety Alert B and Status A and B. Before and after discharge fail.

5. If I make a golden image with the BQ27GDK000EVM's on-board gauge, can I apply this golden image to the bq28z610?

Freak of nature: It charges and discharges now. But XCHG and XDSG are still red. The only colorful register is FET Options under Settings. It's red since I set the SLEEPCHG to red.

It didn't work a second ago. I changed nothing and now it works. Fingers crossed it keeps working. Running rel-dis-rel now.

The only thing I can think of that changed is this: I put a binder clip on the wake button to keep it awake. When my coworker went to remove it, he got an static shock. Maybe he zapped it to life. It is Halloween, after all.

But seriously it seems to be working now for whatever reason. In spite of possibly jinxing it, I wanted to thank you for all your help. Your support has been stellar.

Hi Sam,

The onboard gauge of the GDK is a bq27421 so a golden image from the onboard gauge would not be compatible with bq28z610. Also I recommend logging your rel-dis-rel cycle in case you run into any additional issues.
