Hello all,

I am looking at using LM2733 boost converter in a battery operated device, to make 12V from a 7.4V Li+ battery. The datasheet recommends using a 4-layer board. I was wondering;

1- how well this chip will work on a 2-layer board

2- if there is any development kit for this chip, so I can make sure this chip would actually work for my application before I design it in.

  • The main concern with a 4 layer design is the ability to provide a ground plane.  Although I don't directly support the LM2733, I would normally design that circuit on 2 layers, provided I could dedicate the bottom layer as aground plane.  In general, I consider 2 layers for peak currents less than 3 A, 4 layers above that.  The LM2733 does not even have a thermal pad.
