Hello, I'm having a problem driving a capacitive load with the LM5116 buck converter. I have a circuit designed to match the recommendation in the datasheet, but the converter is failing immediately on power-up, when the inrush current is greatest. If I add an NTC inrush current limiter to the circuit output, the converter does not get damaged, but this isn't feasible as a permanent solution. When I test the circuit on a 4A resistive load, it works fine. The damage on the converter chip is in the area of the boost circuit for the high-side gate drive.
Has anyone encountered problems with the LM5116 with power-up current spikes? The datasheet says it is short-circuit tolerant.
Circuit details:
Vin = 60V
Vout = 30V
Fsw = 650khz
L = 47uH
Load = 3A nominal, 15mF capacitance
Thanks for your help!
