Hello,

I am designing a circuit with the TPS63060 buck/boost IC. The input voltage is 4 alkaline batteries (3.6V to 6.4V) with the output set to 6V. The Typical Application schematic in the datasheet shows a 1uH Coilcraft XFL4020-102 inductor. This part costs about $1.50. I am trying to find a lower cost inductor. I found a Taiyo Yuden NR3015T1R0N inductor that has a max DCR value of 36 mOhms. The Coilcraft part has a DCR value of 12 mOhms. Are there any concerns with using the Taiyo Yuden inductor in this circuit?

Yes, that inductor seems to provide just enough saturation current capability to use with the TPS63060. Its 2.1A rating is right at the current limit level of the IC. The higher DCR will make the circuit less efficient at heavy loads.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for the quick response. Will the higher DCR cause voltage droop at heavy loads, or just make the circuit less efficient? My application only requires the TPS63060 to be powered up long enough to send a 60ms pulse to a solenoid at ~750mA, so I am not as concerned with efficiency for this short duration.

Since the regulation loop is closed after the inductor, as in most power supplies, the DCR does not affect the output voltage regulation.
