PMIC TPS65910A3

I would like to know why an external buck is suggested to be used for PMIC TPS65910A3. Does this IC work only in low power mode because I can see an external buck suggested for this part when it is interfaced to AM335x processor.

My requirement is to run the RTC in AM335x processor in active  and back up mode (by using coin cell).

Can this PMIC be used for this purpose?

What is the difference between low power mode and full power mode?

  • Hi Arjun,

The part can do low power mode and full power mode for the regulators. Low power mode for an LDO reduces it's quiescent current when enabled, at the cost of a reduced output current. Low power for the bucks is considered pulse-skip or PFM mode, as opposed to full PWM.

In backup mode for the PMIC (when VCC7 is <2.6V), the VRTC LDO on all TPS65910x devices is limited to ~100µA, which may not always be able to support the RTC on the AM335x. For more a little more info one can refer to this previous post:

However, there is an internal RTC in the TPS65910x PMIC that can be utilized within the PMIC backup state, which might be an alternative for some applications.
