TPS2373: about internal FET

Part Number: TPS2373
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2372

Hello,

Our customer has a question about TPS2373-4.

Could you please provide a characteristic graph of the internal FET of TPS 2373 - 4 as shown below.

If not, please let me know the upper limit of Cbulk's value.
@ Ta = 85 ° C, Vimax = 57 V, PDoutput = 70 W

Thank you.

  • Konnichiwa Mayumi. I appreciate your customer's interest in the TPS2373-4. The answer to their question is influenced by a few factors like PCB size, amount of copper, and vias (size and location).

The thermal modeling we conducted for this device, during the validation stage, is based on the following parameters:

    • PCB size: 76x114x1.6mm
    • 2 copper layers with 1oz, the bottom layer being a full copper pour
    • 3x3 vias located under the device's exposed pad
    • Operating at 57V with an ambient temperature of 85C

Our results proved that the system would passes inrush, without thermal shutdown, up to ~240uF capacitance. I suggest to use this value as a starting point for validation testing of the customer's system. If wanting to add some margin, or having parameters which vary significantly from the stated list above, they could start with something more conservative.

Note that output power does not matter since the Advanced Startup feature (which is included on the TPS2373 but not the TPS2372) ensures the load is off during inrush.

Best of luck to you and your customer,
