LMZ31503 exposed thermal pins

Hello. Team.

 

I got a question from Our customer Sammy. The question is about the exposed thermal pins (pin#45,46,47)of LMZ31503.

When these pins do not connect with PCB, does LMZ31503 function at all temp(until Ta=85 degC)?

 

They worry about the case that the solder crack occurred in their field.

Their condition is as follows.

 Vin=12V

 Vout=3.3V

 Iout=2A(max)

 

And, What percentage does soldered area need it with each pins?

When these pins do not connect with PCB, does theta ja change to around several degC?

 

Please advise me.

    The thermal pads under the device (pins 45, 46, & 47) must be connected. They are the main thermal path from the device into the PCB. If these pads are not connected, the thermal performance of the device will be reduced. I cannot give a value to how much this will affect the thermal performance.
