LMZ31710 continuous mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMZ31710, LMZ31704

This is a question from our customer and the background for the requirement:  We would like to know the threshold value between the pulse skip mode and the continuous mode.

Our design uses both LMZ31704 and LMZ31710 for fiber module.

For fiber application, we have faced the eye diagram violation of fiber on the light load condition, that is, when we used a single module.

The cause was the noise from DC/DC. We were trying to improve the noise using filter and capacitor, but the most effective solution was forcing DC/DC to the continuous mode.

The load is from 0.5W to 1.0W(3.3V) per 1 fiber module. Hence we need to force the continuous mode for 0.5W(3.3V)

This is why, we need to know the exact threshold value to enter the pulse skip mode. Or, we want to know how to force the continuous mode for all the load conditions.

  • Hi Madhuri,

These devices go into pulse skip mode at typically 150mA to 250mA to improve efficiency at light load. Unfortunately there is no way to force CCM at light load.

My suggestion would be to run the device at 1MHz to 1.2MHz, and to keep a 300mA load on the output.
