FDC1004: Measure a sensor's capacitance without shielding using FDC1004

Part Number: FDC1004
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC2212

Hello,

I'd like to use FDC1004 for measuring floating capacitance (I want to use it without shielding). I know that it is impossible to use FDC1004 for floating capacitance because I read a thread in this forum.

But, if I shift GND, for example connecting a GND pin and a target electrode to 1 V, can I use it like a CDC for a floating capacitance?

Maybe it is a silly question, but I think shifting GND might minimize parasitic capacitance because FDC1004 is referencing ground when measuring capacitance.

If it is impossible, could you recommend a CDC with a sigma-delta modulator for floating capacitive sensors from T.I?

  • Hello Hee,

You can consider using the FDC2212 for measuring sensors without shields. This device has an extremely high resolution, and uses a narrow-band resonant tank sensor to support an extremely wide range of sensor capacitance, and to minimize interference from noise sources such as florescent lights.
