TS3A227E: What is GND_SENSE pin used for?

Part Number: TS3A227E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3204, , TLV320AIC3206

I'm not sure what to do with GND_SENSE.  I'm using a TLV320AIC3204 codec with the TS3A227E and I don't see a GND_SENSE input.  What is it used for?

Thank you

  • Hello Eric,

The GND_SENSE pin is a feedback signal which goes back to the Codec because the G ring on the audio jack doesn’t see true ground, as the image below shows:

The switches have some resistance (circled in blue), therefore the G ring could have some voltage value on it. The concept behind the GND_SENSE pin is that it should feedback into the Codec to help mitigate out any introduced crosstalk. This is why it is present whether your audio jack has a M ring or not.

    Thank you,

    Louie

  • Thank you.   Then how would you hook gnd_sense up to a codec?  I'm using the TI TLV320AIC3204I, should I connect it to an input or something else?

  • Hi, Eric,

For cases where the GND_SENSE pin is not supported, we recommend to connect it to GND.

I would suggest to use the TLV320AIC3206 instead of the TLV320AIC3204. It supports GND_SENSE pin. Basically, it is a TLV320AIC3204 without internal LDO and with additional Charge Pump Feature.

    Best regards,
