Question about MSP430 and Bluetooth

Hi,

I am looking for a low power development board of Bluetooth and microcontroller. This board need to work of few weeks by coin battery or rechargeable Lithium.

My target is to have the ability to transfer data from mobile to the microcontroller and back via Bluetooth or BLE ( I only need to transfer a byte from mobile to microcontroller one in a few sec and return acknowledge) .

I plan to use SPP protocol to that ( if you have a better idea we will be more than happy to hear).

I have the MSP430 Launch pad but know , also I have a CC2541 sensor tag development kit (but I think it is only a transmitter and nor programmable).

I found the eZ430-RF2500 Development Tool and eZ430-RF2500-SEH , but we could not understand if we can program eZ430-RF2500 Battery Board for our on FW or this board only connecting to the other board?
- Can we use this board for our purpose
  - Serial data will be send from my android/Iphone to the MSP430 via the Bluetooth on the board.
If it does do you have a code sample for that?

Also, Do you have another low power board with MSP430 and Bluetooth similar to eZ430-RF2500 Battery Board we can program.

Eyal,

The CC2541 is a BLE Single Mode SoC. If you need BT and BLE, the CC2564 is your choice. It is a Dual Mode solution. The main wiki is here: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CC256x. You can find EVM information as well as Sample Apps.

I looked on this page already, but I got lost.

I still don’t know which board will be the best for my target. My target is to have the ability to transfer data from mobile(Iphone/Andriod) to the microcontroller and back via Bluetooth .

Do you know if the eZ430-RF2500T http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau227e/slau227e.pdf will be good for me or i will need to use PAN1323EMK kit and the MSP-EXP430F5438 board http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CC256x_MSP430_Bluetopia_Basic_Demo_APPS.

Also do you know if the same code will work on both kits? Because I didn’t find a lot of sample code for that on the eZ430-RF2500T .

Eyal,

You can use either EZ430-RF2560 or MSP-EXP430F5438 + PAN1323EMK. The sample code in http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CC256x_MSP430_Bluetopia_Basic_Demo_APPS supports both HWs out of the box.

FYI. The EZ430-RF2500 is not a Bluetooth solution.

Thank you very much, this was very helpful.

Due to your answer I have a new questions:

Does the two application LED on EZ430-RF2560 can be used for my purpose?
Does there is more IO pins I can use?
I saw on the Web there is a kit with BLE EZ430-RF256X. Is the same kit?
- I am still trying to find a BLE solution for saving power.
If in the future (for production) I will use a different microcontroller from MSP430. The SW stack will be the same, so I will not need to do changes on my code?

[MS]: You can use the same SW stack with different MSP430s, but not with different MCUs. If you plan to use a different MCU type, SSO can provide you the stack for it.

Hi Miguel,

I read on the forum, that we can’t develop an Bluetooth application for IOS without MFI.

I found a blog that tell the CC2541DK-MINI succeed to pass this issue. (http://blog.bluetooth-smart.com/2011/11/03/iphone-4s-says-goodbye-to-mfi-for-bluetooth-smart-devices/)

As I understand we could develop application with the CC2541DK-MINI. So I read a bit more about The CC2541 BLE Single Mode SoC.

If I understand correctly, I CC2541 can be program for outputs as well, am I right?

Can you tell me if I will use GATT profile or The Phone Alert Status profile (PASP). The CC2541 will do the work for My goal as well ?

If so, does the CC2541DK-MINI will be good for that?
Does the CC2541DK-MINI Can act as a receiver?
- Data will be send from Andoid/Iphone.
Does it have an outputs for programing ?
Which profiles I can use with Iphone/Ipad without MFI approval?

Hello Eyal,

The CC2564 provides BLE too. Therefore, you can connect to iOS devices without the authentication chip. An examples is located here: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CC256x_MSP430_Bluetopia_Basic_KeyFobDemo_APP
