Hi,

I have designed a custom board around CC2564 with TAS2505 amplifier for one of my BT application to be controlled by Mobile app which is functional. As i can't reveal lot of details about the design, i will try to explain the problem by taking a analogy.

Along with BT stack, i have my own application running on CC2564 which can toggle few GPIO's. As of now i can toggle GPIOs but i need to add conventionality to enable I2C on the stack. As a developer i can always flash the firmware using TI tools but at end user premises i am plan to do OTA (over the air update) using my mobile app.

1.Firstly is my thinking possible?

2. If so, how do i go about? Any documents from TI?

3. Do i require additional HW support on m y board to do the same?

4. When the firmware upgrade is in progress, does BT stack still stay alive to receive data from my App (basically new firmware)?

I know these might be very high level questions but i am not sure where to start from, hence asked it vaguely.

Hi,

I hope you are talking about the Service pack (BTS). If so It should be downloaded after the BT_EN (nSHUTDOWN) is high. So the stack can not stay alive at this point.

Present we convert the ".BTS" in to a array (.h) and that is been placed in file (for example for bluetopia C:\TI\Connectivity\CC256X BT\CC256x MSP430 Bluetopia SDK\v1.5 R2\MSP430_Experimentor\Bluetopia\btpsvend\CC256X.h or CC256XB.h depending on the chip version).

This is been built with the source code and the bin file is been downloaded on to the processor, and while booting up Download_Patch() API is called which will take care of updating the Service pack from the processor to the CC256x. Once the download is done the CC256x is initialized and ready to use.

Thanks Sundeep. I am referring to Stone street stack(aka A2DP profile, not sure if this same as BTS). From the explanation, is it good to say we can't do OTA updates on BT stack?

Is there a way i can download the BIN file remotely aka in my case from Mobile app where the app passes the BIN file ?

Any other alternative TI or thoughts in doing OTA updates?

Hi Prashanth,

Yes you can update the binary remotely as mentioned in the below link (you can search for "FETPRO430 tool" in the net and you should be able to find the download and manual pages, as the link to this broken)

Will check on the link. Does this mean when BT is active, i can transfer the file and on next boot it will pick the latest image?
Is there a protocol to be followed?

Hi,

No. This tool uses the MSP-FET430UIF cable (one side connected to PC and the other side to JTAG port of the Experimenter board) to download the binary to the processor.

I don't think there is a way to update the binary, keeping the BT active. Anyway the binary should be updated in the processor as the CC256x does not have the memory to hold the stack.

One of your reply says we can do Remote update. What does this mean?

Hi,

Yes, I meant if you have the binary, you can updated it using the "FETPRO430 tool" from any PC.

Ohh got it...So looks like there is no option to do remote updates.
As we flash the code into MSP430, is there a possibility of remote update for the same? I meant have external flash where i store the new image and updates to MSP430?

Hi,

I think it should be possible, You can send the Binary via SPP (bluetooth) CC256x and store it in the external flash. and while rebooting you will have to point the address location to the external memory.

Mind that this has nothing to do with CC256x, It is purely related to the processor.

Thanks Sundeep, very helpful. Now i have a basic question. The BTS which you referred, it this the name for the stack residing on MSP430 (Stone street stack) or the core Bluetooth on CC2564. The reason for this question is, when i flash A2DP stack using Code componser, it goes to MSP430 right?

Hi,

Yes, flash any stack it goes (sit on) MSP430.

BTS is the Service pack file, which will downloaded (to initialize the chip) during the CC256x initialization. Service pack implements LMP. It is internal to TI.

Hi,

Now as you have given more clarity, i was basically looking at updating stack stack on MSP430 aka A2DP profile to SPP profile. Even is this not possible to do remotely? Sorry for asking it again...

I did not do it myself, and did not here anyone doing it.
But how can you send this file over Bluetooth to the DUT (MSP430 + CC256x), when it is having only A2DP.

Hi,
I will my custom code in A2DP profile (eg: my application is toggling a GPIO) plus update code (this is what i am looking at).
I am not clear as to what the update code is. Does TI have any tool for doing update on serial interface?

Hi,

No I don't think it is possible if you have only A2DP profile on the DUT, It is not about the toggling (but getting the binary via bluetooth)

Hi,
No, You need to have SPP to transmit the application (binary) over Bluetooth. and as mentioned earlier, you would need to have enough space to store the application, and then to load it.
