Is the board broken?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, CC3200

Hi,

The situation of my board looks physical broken but it starts with software configuration changing. I'm not sure if it's just coincident.

The situation is: I failed to load the code, also failed to Format or Get Version using Uniflash. Following another thread to check FTDI loopback (by short the J6&J7), the FTDI is working OK (I can see echo on Tera Term). Look CC3200 itself has some problem and not responding.

The operations before it 'broken' were: Firstly I tried to create a new workspace to start from fresh to eliminate some code error. I follow the startup steps and everything looks fine. At the step of debugging, it says cannot connect to the device. I tried to go back to the original workspace but still cannot connect. Then I tried to use Uniflash and all operations fail.

It seems the board just broken but it was working fine before I created the workspace. Is it possible any software configuration results this?

  • Hi John,

Have you installed the drivers for your CC3200 Launchpad, as mentioned at the Getting Started Guide? You, can verify this at the Device Manager while your CC3200 Launchpad is connected to your PC.

Have you tried the out of box demo using a smart phone? Did the out of box demo work?

  • Thank you kel.

Yes I did install the drivers. Actually it was working very well and I can download code to it and run, it just suddenly broken.

I didn't test with out of box demo but I double checked by installing SDK, service pack, Tera Term and Uniflash on another PC, and it doesn't help. I plugged in the board, waiting for the driver installation done, use device manager to see the COM port as 5, and set Tera Term to COM5 and set the baud rate, then open Uniflash and change the port to 5, and tried to Get Version. It didn't connect.

I'll try the out of box demo and post the result soon.

  • Try a different USB cable, I had similar issues till I began using a different cable. Getting a solid connection is very important for successful communication.

    Glenn.

  • I checked the out of box demo and it doesn't work. I remembered to remove the jumper from SOP2 and put it back on P58 before I test.

  • Thank you Glenn.

I tried another USB cable and it looks same. Actually I was using the original USB cable come with the kit and which looks in good quality.

This is a known problem. Don't open any serial console like Tera Term that connects to the same COM port as your CC3200 Launchpad, then use Uniflash to communicate with your CC3200 Launchpad.

Close Tera Term and Uniflash. Open only Uniflash and power cycle your CC3200 Launchpad. You, should already be able to communicate to your CC3200 Launchpad. After you have communicated using Uniflash to your CC3200 Launchpad, you can now use your serial console like Tera Term.

You should first format your CC3200 Launchpad with secure and alert unchecked, 1 MB size. Then load latest service pack.

After this try to load example programs like httpserver. Load the .ucf file at Uniflash.

  • Thank you Kel.

I tried but still failed. It shows some difference: when Tera Term is open, it fails immediately, but without Tera Term, it reports FATAL ERROR after two of "reading ACK signal failed" errors, and it took a while.

  • Hi John,

What windows version are you using? There are some issues using CC3200 Launchpad at Windows 8.x.

There are already several cases in this forum, whereas the CC3200 launchpad got broken for whatever reasons. I have a Rev 3.2 CC3200 Launchpad and have been using it for months now, and is still okay. I just remove the power when I remove or place jumpers.

Just wait for a TI Engineer to reply. Luckily they will offer to replace your CC3200 Launchpad.

Maybe there is some design problem with CC3200 Launchpad, making it not robust enough.

  • Hi John,

It does look as a broken device.

We will contact you offline via Email to get you a new board.
In addition, please note that a new production Service Pack has been released (v1.0.0.1.1).
Make sure you start using it instead of the pre-production Service Pack.

    I'm closing this thread.
