LAUNCHXL-CC13-90: Poor range using PCB antenna and built-in demo when CC1190 is disabled

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-CC13-90
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1350, CC1190

We have been testing with a pair of unmodified LAUNCHXL-CC13-90 development boards from TI. We tested using the built-in PER app supplied in the flash of each dev board.

We tested using

  • LR mode
  • 915.0 MHz
  • CC1190 Disabled

Range is limited to about 30 feet indoors.  RSSI maxes out around ~-70dB even when the two boards are sitting side by side.

Previous tests with the CC1350 gave us ranges of several hundred meters using their PCB antennas, so I was expecting something similar when the 1190 was disabled.  We do see much better range when the 1190 is enabled (although not as much as we were hoping given the expected link budget).

Are these results expected?  Is the performance limited by the PCB antenna?  Does the 1190 attenuate the signal when it is disabled or is it bypassed?

Thanks,

Phil
