TPS60400: Low Voltage Automotive Inverter to replace Maxim's MAX16945? (5.4 -> -5.4V is current solution)

Hello,

I need help replacing a Maxim power part for an automotive customer's radar system.

Their current design uses the MAX16945TGUT/V+ for their -5.4V supply. Here is the datasheet for the Maxim part: Datasheet. My goal is to pitch one of our parts to replace the Maxim part. I found one series at TI that is close to what I’m looking for:

TPS6040xx

However, it's not a great fit. The 5.4V input exceeds the recommended Vin range. Also, the max output is -5V. I’m looking for something that can output at least -5.4V. I haven’t been able to find any other automotive grade devices that are able to do this low voltage inversion. Is anyone aware of a device that could replace the current MAXIM part?

Hi Alex,

Unfortunately we do not have an automotive qualified charge pump that can have more than 5.25V at the input.

There is another option, that would be to use a buck converter in the inverting buck-boost configuration as shown in the following reference design: 3- to 11.5-V Input, 1.5-A, –5-V Inverting Power Module Reference Design

I was not able to find any automotive grade inverting DC/DC controllers. I did find a split rail split-rail inverter, https://www.ti.com/product/TPS65131-Q1, but I only need the negative rail.

In regards to your other option, I can use a buck converter and just ground the output pin? I understand that would make the ground pin potential equal to -Vout, but are all automotive grade buck converters able to operate properly in this topology?

Hi Alex,

Yes you should be able to use an automotive qualified buck in that configuration.
I will loop in the respective product line apps engineers so that they can make a recommendation.

Are there any reference diagrams for non-automotive parts where I could just swap in the automotive grade part. Like the reference diagram with the TPS82130, but with an automotive grade counterpart.
