The device can only support either sink or source mode at a time. Data will not be transmitted to the output side, if all the 8 channels are not connected in same mode.

Sinking type: All the LEDx pins need to be <3V. Hence, LEDx pins are connected to GND via LED with drop up to maximum of 3V.
Sourcing Type: All the LEDx pins need to be >3V. Hence, LEDx pins are connected from AVCC through LEDs.
