I may have overlooked that info in the datasheet but can I connect the thermal pad of this amplifier to GND or is it internally connected to some other net?

You can have a look at the following devices: TPA0213 and TPA0211, they are mono class-AB audio amplifiers with stereo headphones and they are able to deliver higher output power than LM4864. I think…

Unfortunately, you can't configure the device that way.
Take a look at TPA205x or TPA0213, both those devices can do the configuration that you are looking for.
