THS3217EVM: Please help in design implementation of the THS3217 IC

Part Number: THS3217EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THS3217, LMH6703, OPA695

1) We are using the Diff amplifier PN: THS3217 and our maximum operating frequency up to 800 MHz’s We want 0dB gain for entire BW from DC to 800 MHz signals. We wanted to conform the Diff pair filter circuit implementation to DAC output as shown below. Since, the evaluation board filter circuit has the BW up to 200MHz only. Please suggest the design implementation to the below circuit provided.

The signal is routed from the Xilinx ZCU216 board, and after going through the Diff amplifier and to the SMA connector. Please also confirm the implementation of filter design at input or output?

2) As of now, we only provided power to the positive terminal as the respective Xilinx board does not have differential supply.  Can you please review the biasing to the THS3217 IC? Also please confirm the design will work or not with our requirements (As we want to pass entire signals in the range of DC to 800MHz from differential to single ended design without distortion of the signals).

Could you please conform the design will work or not? If not please provide any other alternate part that can meet our requirements.

  • Not likely, you need both supplies provided for the part to operate at all, and the nominal SSBW for the D2S stage is 800MHz, but that will bandlimit as you ask for higher swings. And, it is not possible to pass a signal through 800Mhz with "no" distortion as you request.

  • 1) Thank you for your response. We are using separate 16 channel differential input to the single-ended output. Could you please suggest another IC which passes entire signals in the range of DC to 800MHz with 0dB gain or -3dB above?

    2) Can you please suggest another IC for switching the RF communication channels

    Thanks

    Chandan

  • Hello Chandan,

Getting up to 800MHz with flat 0dB trend is difficult. You should look at either the LMH6703 and OPA695. The LMH6703 will still need a minimum of +/-4V, so in your case, a single supply of at least 8V. But for the OPA695, you would still be able to use +5V single supply.

    Thank you,
