USB2ANY: Firmware issue when interfacing with DACX1416EVM GUI

Part Number: USB2ANY

Hello!

I have been trying to interface a DAC81416EVM using a USB2ANY. When I first connect the USB2ANY to the computer, I receive a notification to update the firmware to a newer version.

However, when I open the DACX1416 EVM GUI, I receive the following message:

If I do change the firmware to 2.7.0.0, then the GUI will open with the device in hardware mode, but the device doesn't actually seem to be connected (does not read in correct device ID, does not write to registers, USB2ANY light blinks).

If I do not change the firmware to 2.7.0.0, I am unable to take the device out of demo mode and receive this error.

Both the USB2ANY and DAC81416EVM are brand new, so I think it is a firmware issue rather than a hardware one, though I could be mistaken.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix this problem!

  • Hi Molly,

What two programs are you using? I understand the DACx1416EVM GUI will require the 2.7.0.0 firmware.  Are you also using the USB2ANY Explorer tool?

There are multiple versions of the USB2ANY firmware.  Older software that leveraged an older version of the firmware will require the USB2ANY be "rolled back".  This is an inconvenience but should not cause any problem.  You just need to go through the update dialog whenever to use different software tools.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

I am using USB2ANY explorer along with the DACx1416EVM GUI.

I have been following the steps for each software (upgrading to 2.8.2.0 for USB2ANY, rolling back for the DACx1416EVM), but when I roll back in order to use the DACx1416EVM GUI, the USB2ANY status light blinks, which the manual says means "A hardware, firmware, or USB error occurred. Board must be power-cycled". Even if I do restart the program or power cycle the board, the connection still doesn't seem to work and I cannot write to or read anything from the registers.

If it should still work regardless of the firmware difference, then it might be a separate issue. Do you know what else might cause the light to blink and the registers not to update?

    Thanks!

  • So to clarify, the USB2ANY cannot recover after rolling back the driver to 2.7.0.0? Or does it recover if you update it again to 2.8.x.x?

  • If I update again to 2.8.2.0 while using the DACx1416EVM GUI, the program is forcibly closed. If I maintain 2.7.0.0, then the software indicates that the USB2ANY is connected but the USB2ANY indicates that there is an error.

  • So to clarify, if you update the U2A to 2.7.0.0, then restart the DACx1416 GUI, you see this error ever time?

Can you share your configuration of the EVM? IE the jumper positions and external supplies? The GUI will force a demo mode if there is an error at startup.  The U2A can report an error if it's supply rails are shorted to some other potential.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • If I update to 2.7.0.0 and restart the program, I do not see the error message but the USB2ANY indicator light blinks as if there is an error.

    My configuration is as follows:

    J2: open

    J3: open

    J9: closed

    J10: 1-2

    J11:1-2

    J12: 2-3

    J7.3: ground

    J7.5: 5 V

    J7.6: 0 V

    J7.7:15 V

  • Hi Molly,

I can see that you configuration seems correct.

After opening GUI , can you able to seed hardware is connected at right bottom of GUI ? or  Demo mode is enabled by default ?

  • If I do not change the firmware requirements when I first set up the USB2ANY, then the GUI will open with 'Hardware Connected'. Demo mode is only enabled if I upgrade the firmware to 2.8.2.0.

  • Hi,

Please stick on 2.7.0.0  version then only EVM will work.

Also, try with different USB port and try.

  • Hi,

Unfortunately it still does not work after sticking with 2.7.0.0. and changing the USB port.

  • Hi Molly ,

I tried myself , upgrade USB2ANY firmware 2.8.2.0 then rollback to 2.7.0.0 version then connected to EVM . I detected , working fine without any issue.

After connecting power supply is on, did you measured all power rails are ok in EVM ?  Check whether all power rails are proper at EVM.

Also, can you please uninstall  and reinstall the EVM software then try.

  • I have checked all of the power rails on the EVM; they are all okay. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software; still no luck.

At this point, do you think it might be a hardware issue with either the DAC or the USB2ANY? Despite many troubleshooting attempts, there is still no working connection between the two.

  • Hi,

Pls list out test point with measured voltage.i want confirm before proceed further.

  • Apologies, I think I may have misunderstood your previous request. Here are the voltages measured at each test point.

    TP3: 2.5 V (should both TP3 and TP4 read 5 V, which is my input to pin J7.5 for VDD/VAA?)

    TP4: 2.5 V

    TP5: 0 V (should this be supplied as 3.3 V from the J8.5 on the USB2ANY?)

    TP11: 15 V

    TP13: 0 V

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

I can see that you don't have proper supply for VDD/VAA and VIO.

Please ensure below supply for device operation.

    1. TP3: 2.5 V (should both TP3 and TP4 read 5 V, which is my input to pin J7.5 for VDD/VAA?)

        TP4: 2.5 V

        [AM]: TP3 and TP4 (VDD/VAA) should be 4.5 V to 5.5 V device to operate

    2. TP5: 0 V (should this be supplied as 3.3 V from the J8.5 on the USB2ANY?)

[AM]: Yes, TP5 (VIO) coming from J8.5 when J10(1,2) to be short with jumper. You can observe this 3.3 V once USB2ANY connected with PC.

    3. TP11 (VCC) = 15V and TP13(VSS) =0 V.

     [AM]: No issue here.

  • My test pins now read:

    TP3: 5 V

    TP4: 5 V

    TP5: 3.3 V

    TP11: 15 V

    TP13: 0 V

However, the device still does not connect to the computer. The USB2ANY indicator light still blinks as though there is an error, the GUI does not read in the right device ID, and we are still unable to write to registers.

Is there anything else I can try?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

LED blinking means USB2ANY not establish connection ? the issue may be firmware / hardware with USB2ANY interface.

    Do the following

    1. Disconnect USB2ANY interface from EVM

    2. Connect USB2ANY to PC via USB cable.

         - see LED status -It should be ON ( no blinking)

  • We have tried this USB2ANY now with two different computers; it still blinks.

  • Hi Molly Herzog,

    It seems USB2ANY issue.

Could you please share you shipping address  via from you official email id.
