INA228-Q1: Current/energy polarity

Part Number: INA228-Q1

Hi,

the circuit looks very good, finally with a permissible common modem of 85 V. The only thing I could not understand from the manual are the current directions and registers. If there is a positive polarity (consumption) on the shunt, the value in the ENERGY register will increase, ok? But what if there is a negative polarity, will this value be subtracted or will the negative polarity (opposite direction of current) not affect this register? Charge register is just current integration? Again the same question, how is the polarity of the current distinguished?

I just need to measure current, power and energy in both directions, both for import mode and for export mode (charging).

Thanks.

  • Hello Michal

The energy register is for the absolute energy, and is always positive, it will go up when energy is spent from current in either direction.  The charge register on the other hand will go up or down based on the direction of the current. The polarity of the current is determined from IN+ and IN-, if IN+ > IN-, then it is positive current.

So, it looks like this device will work nicely for you. Let me know if you have any further questions.
