INA240: INA240 ESD test

Part Number: INA240
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA190, INA193

Hi team,

my customer is doing ESD test on INA240. And they find when they use 6kV voltage to do ESD test, some of the IC will go into a abnormal status as below,

  1. when measured current is 0, the INA240 output is about 0.45V(VCC is 3.3V)
  2. the device temperature will rise up to be above 100C very quickly

And if we cycle the power supply power(power off and power on), the IC will recover to be normal.

So we have below questions,

  1. did we meet similar issue before
  2. what kind of abnormal status is the device in when this issue happens. Is that as our expected? Thanks.
  • Hollis,

We have not encountered an issue like this, as we do not test ESD to this level. The INA240's maximum rated ESD test is a human body model test at 2kV as per the datasheet:

Your customer is testing at 3x the maximum rated ESD performance. It sounds as if something is latching up in the device when the customer performs this test that is alleviated through power cycling, but if the device were to experience this amount of ESD, we cannot guarantee that the device would not sustain damage.

  • Hi Carolus,

do we have any products/roadmap which has a higher ESD rating? Thanks.

  • Hollis,

The INA190 is tested to 3kV, but I believe that is the highest level of testing we perform. I can check with systems to see if there are any higher options available, but we are starting to enter the holiday period here in the states. It may take a few days to receive a response. I will follow up again next week when I confirm whether we have something better.

  • Hollis,

I spoke with systems, and they advised the highest ESD testing current amplifier that we have in the portfolio is the INA193, which is tested to a 4kV HBM. We generally do not get much higher than 2.5kV due to the size of the cells.
