INA226-Q1: looking for pin to pin replacement

Part Number: INA226-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA237-Q1, INA238-Q1, INA228-Q1, INA226, INA237, INA230

Hi sir,

My customer is looking for INA226-Q1 pin to pin replacement as 2nd source.

In TI website, I can find INA238-Q1, INA237-Q1 and INA228-Q1. May I know which one will you recommend?

Is there any design caution we should check when transferring from INA226-Q1 to alternative pin to pin replacement?

Thank you.

  • Hello,

The INA238-Q1, INA237-Q1, and INA228-Q1 do all have the same package and pin out as the INA226-Q1; however, they will not have the same register mapping as the INA226-Q1, so host programming/firmware will differ.

Aside from the register mapping differences, the three devices in consideration have expanded functionality primarily temperature measurement, maximum common-mode operating voltage, faster BW, and higher quiescent current (IQ). IQ could be a deciding factor because IQ will be higher for three considered devices, potentially up to a few hundred micro-Amps.

The INA237-Q1 will be the cheapest replacement, but its accuracy for some specs is lower compared to INA226-Q1. Going from INA226 to INA237, Vos_max will increase from ±10µV to ±50µV, CMRR_min will decrease from 126 dB to 120 dB, and max ADC gain error will increase from 0.1% to 0.3%. Pretty much all of the other specifications are better (or same) in the INA237-Q1 compared to INA226-Q1. So if customer can accept higher initial input offset (Vos_max), higher offset from CMRR (Vos_cmr_max), and higher overall gain error, then I would recommend INA237-Q1. But if they cannot accept any more error, then the INA238-Q1 is the better choice.

    Sincerely,

    Peter

  • In addition we recently released the INA230 in the same 10-pin MSOP package and it is register map identical to the INA226 so should require no software changes.   It is lower accuracy at ±25µV (vs. ±10µV) VOS_MAX, 120dB CMRR_min (vs. 126 dB), and ADC GAIN ERROR max of ±0.3% (vs. ±0.1%).
