LMV324: Operation under VCC~5.5V

Hi team,

In the datasheet of LMV324, it says that both “Absolute Maximum Supply Voltage” and “Recommended Operational Condition of Supply Voltage” are 5.5V.

But in many op amps, abs. max. supply voltage is higher than recommended maximum supply voltage.

So, my customer is wondering if it works with typical VCC=5.5V.

They understand that TI should not guarantee that.

They are considering to use the LMV324 with the power supply at 5.5V +/- 0.2V.

Do you think LMV324 works in this condition?

Any voltage above the absolute maximum rating of 5.5 V (such as 5.51 V, or the 5.7 V you want to use) can damage the device.

Even if it does not break immediately, electromigration will degrade the electrical characteristics.

Hi Ohashi,

the idea is to use a maximum supply voltage of +5V and to have some headroom (500mV) for manufacturing tolerances of +5V regulator plus some ripple and noise, but in any case to stay safely below 5.5V.

Increasing the supply voltage beyond the absolute maximum ratings results in an exponential increase of probability of damage.

Additional Question

I want to know the recommended alternative for LMV324 when the power supply is 5.5V+/-0.2V.

Is it OK to use LMV324A with the power supply at 5.5V+/-0.2V since it's Absolute Maximum Supply Voltage is 6V?

The recommended maximum for the LMV324A is still 5.5 V. Above that, the electrical characteristics are no longer guaranteed.

Is there a reason why the supply should be 5.5 V, and not 5 V? The latter is much more common and will make the design easier and cheaper.

The customer's system is supposed to have 5.0V analog rail, so I'll check it and get back to you later.
