current sense on ASIC supplies

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI

Hi ,

I need to sense current on few of my power  supplies going to the ASIC.   One is a 3.3V supply with load current ranging from 100uA  to 1A.   Other is 1.2 V supply with load current from 50uA to 500mA.   I am open to using any value of shunt resistor.   Please suggest which product to use and a good shunt resistor source .  I need a voltage output and my  measuring equipment can measure voltage outputs ranging from 100mV to few volts with good accuracy.

thx

Binesh

  • Hello Binesh,

For the first case (Vcm=3.3V) I recommend looking at either the INA216Ax series or the INA210-4.

For the latter case (Vcm=1.2V), you cannot use the INA216Ax devices for their common-mode only goes down to 1.8V.  Therefore I would recommend looking at the INA210-4 devices.

All of the aforementioned devices are voltage-output.

For shunt resistor source there are numerous choices.  Recently we have used Ohmite for our EVMs.  For shunt sizing recommendations you will need to take accuracy into consideration for minimum-current conditions and ensure that the input and/or output specification are not violated for maximum-current conditions.

We have a free SPICE simulator (TINA-TI) that is available for download at:

There is an example TINA-TI circuit in the INA210-4, but we do not have a model for the INA216Ax series at this time.
