OPA548: Chip reliability vs temperature limit

Dear e2e support,

My customer uses our OPA548 in a high temperature environment, causing it to go into thermal protection regularly.

Could you tell us how much is affected the OPA548 reliability (lifetime) under such conditions?

Are there any reliability data that we could share, in this case?

    The thermal shutdown sense circuitry is integrated in the OPA548 output transistor structures. As the datasheet states "Internal thermal shutdown circuitry shuts down the output when the die temperature reaches approximately 160°C, resetting when the die has cooled to 140°C." Therefore, the maximum temperature it experiences is in the range of the maximum rated junction temperature (Tj =150 °C) and the shutdown prevents it from getting any hotter.

    Certainly, operating any semiconductor at elevated temperature hastens it wear out as described by the Arrhenius equation. However, there is nothing else about the OPA548 semiconductor characteristics that would cause it to die earlier than any other properly processed power semiconductor.

    The OPA548 is a legacy power op amp. It is unlikely that the OPA548 received any particular life test associated with exercising the thermal shutdown function. We have no information indicating that such testing was ever conducted and there are no reliability reports of this nature available.
