I have some questions about TL082 / TL084 JFET-Input OP-Amp.

(1) Supply Voltage

On the D/S, absolute maximum Vcc+ and Vcc- are specified in +/-18V. I understand +19V/-16V is under the absolute maximum rating and it is not over the absolute maximum. Is that right?

(2) Effect on Characteristics of using Vcc=+19V,-16V

On the D/S, Electrical Characteristics and Operating Characteristics are specified in Vcc=+/-15V. When Vcc is higher than the specified voltage like Vcc=+19V/-16V, Is there any influence in Electrical/Operating Characteristics?

(3) Input Voltage

On the D/S, absolute maximum Input Voltage is specified in +/-15V. Why it is far below Vcc(+/-18V)? In case of ADTL082(ADI, JFET-Input OP-Amp), absolute maximum Input Voltage is specified in "+/-V supply".

Hello Hide,

1) Yes , that is right

2) It has been characterized that absolute maximum operation including 36 volt operation is not immediately destructive and will perform in a similar fashion to a 30V supply.

3) It is unusual to have that limitation stated, the import thing is that the input stays inside the supply rails.

For further reference, I'd like to understand in case input voltage exceeds absolute maximum. What is concern input voltage exceed absolute maximum (ex. +/-16V)? Does it cause the destruction of the internal circuit?

If the supply voltage is too high, transistors will breakdown causing large current flow and permanent device damage.

The answer is yes, in most cases the if input voltage exceeds the supply voltage by more than about 600mV, internal diodes will conduct current and will be destroyed unless that current is limited to about 5mA with a resistor in series with the voltage source and the input.

I understand when input voltage exceeds the supply voltage, internal diodes will be destroyed unless the current limitation.

In case of the following, internal diodes will be destroyed or not?

Supply Voltage: +/-17V (below absolute maximum: +/-18V)

Input Voltage: +/-16V (exceed absolute maximum: +/-15V)
