OPA856: Propagation delay

Part Number: OPA856
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI

Hi Team,

Our customer would like to know the propagation delay of the OPA856 as it is not stated in the datasheet. I have searched the forum but it seems that opamps that are configured as comparator has this information but opamps which functions as amplifier doesn't have this specification. Is it correct?

Regards,
Danilo
  • So the prop delay of an op amp (please don't use it as a comparator) can ideally be derived from the phase plot on a linear scale - but does depend on the small signal response shape for the gain and load being used, what is that for your customer.

Data sheet plots if done correctly will often include a prop delay for the EVM board in their measurements. Often, the model is more from design sims of the silicon - often that neglects the packaging delay - I was using about 0.4nsec added delay for a SOT23-5 package in years past.

  • Hi Danilo,

Comparators and OPAmps contain very different circuits.

but opamps which functions as amplifier doesn't have this specification. Is it correct?

    Yes, this is correct.

But because of the phase response of output signal referring to input signal in an OPAmp circuit there exists a specified phase delay for each frequency of sine wave (frequency domain). Because of this phase delay a TINA-TI simulation can be used to make an estimation of "propagation delay" for a certain signal.
