Rogowski Coild interface Development kit

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS131M04, ADS131M04EVM

Hi,

I am starting a new project where I need to measure the current on a Rogowsky coil (integrated in a transformer).

Sensor output resolution: 150 mV/kA

Maximum Current: 33 kA

Frequency: 1kHz

I would like to first start from a Reference Design and from there optimize the circuit to our needs.

We would require unipolar interface with the ADC and a SPI-3V3 interface for the MCU

Which development kit would you recommend for this sensor range interface? And which ADC?

Much appreciated for your guidance.

Regards

Pedro

  • Hello Pedro,

Between the TI reference designs, "Active Integrator for Rogowski Coil Reference Design with Improved Accuracy for Relay and Breaker" and "High accuracy split-phase CT electricity meter reference design using standalone ADCs" should be able to get pretty close. They can be found here: https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00777 and here: https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-010037, respectively.

I will acknowledge that the e-meter reference design works under the assumption of using a CT but a Rogowski coil shares the same assumption that the sensor inherently provides isolation to the ADC. As a result, we recommend the ADS131M0x family for both sensor types. Not sure how many channels you need but ADS131M04 is a decent start and it should have everything you really need.

As you may know, reference designs aren't really sold but all of the data and design files can be found as a reference. I would think getting an ADS131M04EVM would be a good start if you like the ADC.

Let me know if you have any questions about the ADS131M0x family and I'd be happy to help.

    Best,

    -Cole

  • Hi Cole,

many thanks for your detailed and prompt reply! I will order a ADS131M04EVM  to get started.and Design a small evaluation board based on the https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00777.

    Best,

    Pedro
