AFE031: Data rate

Part Number: AFE031
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE032,

Hi Team,

Our customer is looking for PLC device that has the capability to provide bit rates around > 1Mbps, and also have a system latency of less than 250uS for both the time to package and send the data over the power line and time to extract the signal and convert back for normal processing.  He would like to know if we have details on these performance aspects.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

Our customer is looking for PLC device that has the capability to provide bit rates around > 1Mbps, and also have a system latency of less than 250uS for both the time to package and send the data over the power line and time to extract the signal and convert back for normal processing.

AFE031 and AFE032 are both Narrow Band Power Line Communication controllers (NB-PLC, operating BW < 500kHz), however, non of the the products are able to support a bit rate over 1Mbps. AFE03x PLC controllers are supported by PRAMPS team. In addition, the NB-PLC is operating in Half-Duplex mode, which means that transmissions are able to run in two directions, but not at the same. In other worlds, the transmission line can only operate in one direction at a time in Half-Duplex mode A Full-Duplex mode is able to transmit and receive over one channel simultaneously and at the same time.

THS6222 is the Broadband PLC (BB-PLC, BW > 500kHz) line driver from our HS Op Amp Product (this is a high speed power amplifier driver), I do not believe that the driver is able to support > 1Mbps (may be theoretically in a controlled environment). Often you will see some advertisements that claim that the PLC data rate is up to 1Gbps or higher, but the actual data rate may be close to 200Mbps when operating under a real world application over the standard AC powerline (or DC powerline).

I captured one of product line over amazon.com (my guess). I never used the product before and it is likely not TI's line driver either. I just wanted to point out the real world application for your references.

Below are tables are captured over the internet. The left table is related to TI product lines, which were published at approx. 10 years ago.

I hope that I answered your question. If you have additional questions, please let us know.

    Best,

    Raymond
