TL441: does it work with a single supply?

Part Number: TL441

What are the conditions to make the TL441 work with a single supply, say +5V? Should the ground in the device be shifted? Could TL441-ground and Vcc- be connected together to power-ground? Should the input signal be shifted to make it work? Any comments are highly appreciated!

Thank you!

  • Hello Lenio,

The TL441 Log amplifier is designed to be used with dual polarity power supplies, ideally VCC± = ±6 V as the datasheet indicates. Connecting Vcc- to GND would not provide correct functionality of the TL441.

If you don't have access to a negative supply in the application I suggest adding a boost/buck regulator that provides the inverse polarity of the applied input voltage. For example, if only +6 V is available an inverting boost/buck regulator provides the -6 V. TI produces many different boost/buck and charge pump products. If you decide to go that route the folks who support TI's Power Management Products e2e could provide you with their best recommendations.
