OPA171: Is this the best Amp for my application?

Part Number: OPA171
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV9162, OPA2992, OPA2990, OPA2991, TLV9152, TLV9102

I am looking for an opamp with a +/- 3V supply voltage, low Vos offset voltage and comes in a both a small package option for production and also a SOIC package option for easy prototyping. Is the OPA171 the best opamp for these requirements?

I really appreciate the help with this.

  • Hi John,

Are there any other spec requirements for this application such as supply current, rail-to-rail, etc? And how low of an offset voltage does the customer need?
We have many different op amps that fit those specs so would like to help narrow down other options if the customer has additional information.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
    Thank you!

    Best Regards,
    Ashley

  • Hello Ashley,

I really appreciate the reply to this. Unfortunately at this time I only have these spec requirements so I was hoping to find a few that would fit the best. Does my OPA171 choice work well with the specs given?

  • Hey John,

    Welcome to e2e!

I think the best course of action is to prototype with a dual op amp (more are available in SOIC) and design in a single op amp (available in smaller packages).
It is inefficient to design a single channel 8 pin SOIC so the newer devices do not come in this package option; luckily, the quad/dual/single within a family are all the same just in different packages.

Here is a parametric search showing dual op amps that have SOIC packages, filtered by the most package options, and 6V rail
    I recommend the top 6 options as these are our newer devices: TLV9102, TLV9152, TLV9162, OPA2990, OPA2991, and OPA2992.
As you can see, looking at the OPAx991 datasheet, that the dual is available in SOIC 8 and the single is available in the tiny SC70.

In the prototyping, I imagine one of the channels will remain unused, I recommend following the guidelines in How to Properly Configure Unused Operational Amplifiers

    All the best,
    Carolina
