INA186: Application note for noise improvement

Part Number: INA186

Hello Support team,

My customer try to investigate to improve noise performance on INA186. Do you have any application note? They tried Cf between IN+ and IN- and see any improvement. They would like to achieve more higher noise immunity rather than specific noise support, so general application note is very helpful.

Thanks,

Koji Ikeda

  • Hi Koji,

where is the noise coming from? Input, output, Ref pin or supply voltage?

  • Hi Koji,

In section 8.1.3 of the INA186 datasheet, it is discussed in detail regarding input filtering. Similar to what customer has already found out, input filtering helps limit noise entering the amplifier. For other sources of external noise, similar filtering will help.

To reduce the noise contribution from INA186 itself, low pass filtering at the output helps.

There is not a dedicated application note that I’m aware of. But general noise reduction technic applies.

    Regards, Guang

  • Hello Guang-san,

Thank you for your support. I think that some customer uses filter cap between IN+/IN- and GND, is this also effective on INA186 for noise reduction?

    Thanks,

    Koji Ikeda

  • Hi Koji,

If high frequency common mode input noise is present, filter caps to ground will help. Sometimes circuits need to undergo EMI testing. In situations like this, I would definitely put in place common mode filtering.

  • Hi Koji,

The big issue with common mode filtering is that the least imbalance will ruin the awesome common mode rejection of INA186. Because of this the customer should only use rather small common mode capacitances and these capacitances should offer very low temperature and long term drifts. 1% toleranced C0G or NP0 capacitors are recommended.
