LM324: Can LM324 accept bipolar power supply?

Hi Expert,

I can see in datasheet, LMX24 only show VCC=5V, is this means LM324 can only use single power? 

But in TINA simulation, LM324 also works good under bipolar power. 

If LM324 can accept bipolar power, what is the common mode range?

  • From the point of view of the LM324, there is no difference between single or dual supplies. It does not have a GND pin. Whether you have a single supply with VCC+ = 5 V and VCC− = 0 V, or dual supplies with  VCC+ = 2.5 V and VCC− = −2.5 V, the voltage between the VCC+ and VCC− pins always is 5 V.

    In the datasheet, all voltages are measured relative to VCC−. The valid input common-mode range always is from VCC− to VCC+ − 2 V.

    yes, you are right: Table 6.7 of datasheet discussing the specifications of LM324 has not profited from the latest revisions and shows only single supply specs. But, of course, all LM324 variants can be supplied by a bipolar supply voltage as shown in section 9.2.

    another question: 

    1. How to understand the CM range is start from "0" ? I think this "0" is same to the Vcc- voltage . 

    I think should use "Vcc-" in the table.

    2. Under "absolute maximum ratings" there is a comment: 

    How to understand the "network GND" ? I think it's also same to Vcc-.
