the datasheet explains the functionality of LM13700 extremely well and better than I could. I strongly recommend to read the datasheet first.

Hi Brian,

figure 25 of datasheet shows an AGC amplifier which provides an automatic gain control (AGC) and keeps the amplitue of output signal constant.
